With Ambroise Vollard, Paris; with Paul Cassirer, Berlin; sold to Oscar Schmitz (1861-1933), Dresden, 1912, until d. 1933 (on loan to the Kunsthaus, Zürich, 1931-?) [1]; Schmitz estate, 1933-1936; with Wildenstein & Co., Paris, 1936 [2]; sold to Carroll S. Tyson, Jr. (1878-1956), Philadelphia, January 5, 1937 [3]; bequest to PMA, 1963. 1. See Rewald, The Paintings of Paul Cézanne: A Catalogue Raisonné, New York, 1996, no. 515; and Wildenstein & Co., Paris, "La Collection Oscar Schmitz," 1936, no. 10. According to Lionello Venturi (Cézanne: son art -- son oeuvre, Paris, 1936, no. 411), and repeated by Rewald, the painting was on deposit with the Kunsthalle Basel; however, this is probably an error as Schmitz loaned most of his collection, including the French works, to the Kunsthaus Zürich when he lived temporarily in Switzerland beginning in 1931 (H. Biedermann, "Die Sammlungen Adolf Rothermundt und Oscar Schmitz in Dresden," in Andrea Pophanken, ed., Die Moderne und ihre Sammler, Berlin, 2001, p. 221). 2. Included in the exhibition "La Collection Oscar Schmitz," Paris, Wildenstein & Co., 1936, no. 10. Georges Wildenstein purchased 62 of the French works from the Schmitz collection in 1936 (see Biedermann, "Die Sammlungen Adolf Rothermundt und Oscar Schmitz in Dresden," p. 221-222, and p. 233, n. 46; and Daniel Wildenstein and Yves Stavridès, Marchands d'art, Paris, 1999, p. 87). 3. Copy of dated receipt from Wildenstein & Co., New York, to Tyson in curatorial file.
